Disconnected // 2017 // 26”x41”x17” // walnut and maple

Disconnected became my heart and soul as I was working on it. This is my first real/serious wood project. I used dowel joinery, dado joinery, and mortise and tenon joinery while learning how to use the router and the lathe. I also practiced (and pretty much perfected on this chair) the drill press and jig making in order to attach the two walnut sides of the chair top with the middle maple piece with 6 perfectly measure doweled joints. Precision was key. My bandsaw skills improved as I used it to cut most of this piece. All in all, I was, and still am, enormously proud of this chair and so thankful for the guidance and help I received through it all.

To be up close and personal to the back of the chair adds a mental depth of curiosity and belonging but not necessarily connecting, which was a relevant obstacle in my life at the time. The purpose of Disconnected is to emphasize the rigidity of the work and the upfront aspect of all of the connections, with the humor of disconnect along side the idea. I have always strived to bring art into each part of my life, even unintentionally at times. Though woodworking is such a beautiful craft and even the most simple chair can be the most intriguing, I challenged myself to go a step further and pushed an artistic mindset and perspective on the idea of the Chair in sculpture. This piece was used as a learning stage in my exploration of wood and this craft by allowing myself to mix as many processes as I could while communicating my life’s journey through the work.
